Gastroenterology Fellowship
Overview
The primary goal of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is to train qualified internists to become practitioners and consultants in Gastroenterology. The three-year fellowship has two components: clinical and research. Twenty-four months are spent in clinical activities and six to twelve months are devoted to research. Organization of the fellowship is purposefully flexible in order to meet the needs of the fellow.

The gastroenterology services at both OUMC and the VA hospital function primarily as consulting services. Consultations are received from the general medical wards, general surgery service, OB/GYN service, and other medical services in the hospital complex. Three to six consults are received per day. The consults are seen initially by a student and/or resident and then presented informally to the GI fellow. Subsequently, the patient problem is presented at GI Attending rounds. Emphasis is placed on correlating clinical history, physical findings, and laboratory data with differential diagnoses and selection of appropriate diagnostic studies. The GI unit takes pride in providing prompt and thoughtful consultation services to our colleagues.
Endoscopic units at OU and VA are fully equipped with the latest endoscopic equipment and provide a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. At present, each unit has two-three endoscopy rooms that function simultaneously and are fully staffed. Both GI units perform esophageal motility. Other standard GI diagnostic tests performed include breath hydrogen testing and capsule endoscopy. GI Fellows gain proficiency in upper endoscopy, enteroscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy and small bowel biopsy. Fellows participate in diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. Faculty attend GI Fellow clinics weekly at both OU and VA.
Educational activities within the GI section include weekly case presentation, and pathophysiology discussion; biweekly pathology conference, radiology conferences and Journal Club; and monthly research conferences. Fellows may participate in the annual Arkansas Oklahoma Endoscopic Society meeting. Fellows also may attend either the annual Digestive Diseases Week ( AGA, AASLD, and ASGE) or the Annual Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
At present, the GI section has ten full-time faculty. Volunteer clinical faculty participate in our educational conferences.

Oklahoma City is one of the leading health referral centers in the Southwest, thanks to the growth and progress of the Oklahoma Health Center, located on a 200-acre campus with six health-related colleges, four hospitals, and several research facilities. Oklahoma Health Center is the nation's largest independent medical center, employing over 12,000 people.
Oklahoma City, the capitol of Oklahoma, claims a population of 521,000 residents with 1,172,000 in the metropolitan area. "The City" is located in the heartland of the United States. It is 1,291 feet above sea level, which makes it a city for all seasons with the climates ranging from the mid-30's during the coldest winter months, to as high as >100 during the hot summer months of July and August. Oklahoma City is conveniently located near the geographic center of the continental U.S., with many interstate highways and a large airport.
We have an NBA team (Thunder), a minor league baseball team (Redhawks), arena football (Yard Dawgz) and a minor league hockey team (Blazers). The OU, OSU, and Tulsa athletic teams are pretty good too. All play nearby. Recently, rowing has become a popular sport on the Oklahoma River with two large facilities located here. The US Olympic rowing team plans some training here.
