The inception of the present curriculum marked the departure from a sharp demarcation between the basic science years and clinical rotations.
Preclinical course work is designed to provide an integrated overview of human biology and behavior in the broadest sense. The classroom and laboratory studies are complemented with clinical demonstrations and case studies, problem based learning, and an extensive online curriculum.
At the completion of second year, students should be well grounded in basic clinical skills, organizing and synthesizing physical examination findings into a clinical problem list, developing diagnostic alternatives, and accurately presenting clinical information. Students are required to take and pass USMLE Step 1 prior to being promoted to the third year.
Third and fourth year students have seven required clerkships, an ambulatory medicine rotation, a rural based preceptor experience, and several subspecialty elective opportunities. The core exposure to family medicine, internal medicine, neuroscience, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery under close faculty supervision provides broad based interactions with patients in emergent, ambulatory, chronic and intensive clinical settings. Students must take USMLE Step 2 prior to graduation.
